From the recording Subways Hum
Shonali’s statement on Subways Hum: “A common thread amongst those of us that are drawn to the chaos of the big city is that even while existing in the middle of a crowd of people, we must still find moments for introspection. There are rhythms to our daily life, which become a part of the landscape in which our minds wander, which include the honking of cabs, and the symphony of sounds emerging from our subways. I wrote this song as I was feeling the loss of great loves in my life and thinking about how transformative love can be while literally feeling the reverberations of the subway under my feet. It felt like I had no choice but to call the song Subways Hum.”
Lyrics
SUBWAYS HUM by Shonali Bhowmik
This is where I turn the key
I can’t sit and watch you sleep
My identity ran away
The subways hum and you’re okay
When you find love
Where does it go?
May we just lay in the grass?
Pretend to speak about the past
I’m only here for a day
The subways hum and you’re okay
When you find love
Where does it go?
I’m not afraid of swimming with you.
What people say underwater
I can’t undo
Come out! Come Out!
The living have their ways.
Highlight reels and ferris wheels
Did you ever think we’d get out of here?
Reflections in our eyes made us laugh
I find peace in the dead of night
The breeze always sheds a brilliant light
The trees wave their ghoulish arms
The subways hum and your not alarmed
When you find love, Where does it go?
When you find love, Where does it go?
When you find love, Where does it go?
When you find love, Where does it go?
When you find love Where does it go?
When you find love, Where does it go?
When you find love, Where does it go?
When you find love, Where does it go?
When you find love, Where does it go?
When you find love, Where does it go?
When you find love, Where does it go?
